The Summer School “History Takes Place: European Memorial Sites” took place from September 7th until 18th, 2009 in Warsaw. Unlike any other European capital, Warsaw clearly exposes the major transition periods of the past two centuries. The participants have explored historical traces in local topographies, in architecture and monuments, such as traces of the Saxon period, industrialization, humiliation of the capital during the partitions, Second World War, reconstruction of Warsaw or the present urban change.
Prof. Dr. Werner Benecke, since 2007 holder of the Bucerius Chair of Culture and History of Central and Eastern Europe (European University Viadrina at Frankfurt/Oder) served as the academic director of the summer school.
